Lead Times for Tip/Tilt Mirror Systems More than Halved

June 05, 2024

The Karlsruhe team in the Motorized Positioners value stream has succeeded in reducing lead times for tip/tilt mirror systems from twenty-five to twelve weeks, for some variants even to just eight weeks. This was achieved primarily through improved production processes and master data. Extensive recruiting activities such as the PI Career Days also made a significant contribution. Several new, qualified colleagues were recruited for PI who are now also helping to increase available capacity and thus reduce lead times.

It was particularly important to us that the velocity and efficiency gains did not come at the expense of quality. This has been fully achieved. For our customers, this means not only faster delivery but also greater reliability, and more flexibility, for example in the case of repeat orders. In this way, we are not only able to increase customer confidence in PI, but also to strengthen our competitiveness in the long term.

Tip/tilt mirror systems are essential components for optical bench structures, to deflect laser light quickly and precisely. Tip/tilt mirrors also have potential applications in free-space optical communications systems. The most prominent application is in satellite communications systems. Several technology companies are building massive space-based communications networks of the next generation. Great growth is expected in this area. For more details, please refer to this webpage.
