Standardization Team Operates Within Technical Product Management
Since September 1, 2022, a standardization team has been established in the PI DPG Support Function Technical Product Management division, headed by Steffen Arnold. Since then, the team has been responsible for the standardization of products across the value streams.
Product standardization pursues the following goals:
- Consistently reducing the number of product variants for the components used
- Providing standard interfaces for components and modules
- Assembling standard catalogs, modules, and sets, as well as providing these to the respective users
Implementing these goals reduces the internal variance, increases the use of common parts, and simplifies modularization of the products. In turn, this will contribute towards increased added value in the company.
Furthermore, the new team is meant to develop a standardization process, as well as develop inter-divisional procedures to integrate standardization into processes such as the product development process and the process for handling engineering change requests.
Standardization Team's Initial Lighthouse Projects
At the start of its function, the new team defined two lighthouse projects. The "Sensor Technology" project is being implemented and will be trained in June 2023, and the "Cables & Connectors" project is in progress.
For these projects, data collection is in the foreground. Subsequently, an inter-divisional expert team analyzes and evaluates the data. Using this data base, concepts for the standardization of components and modules are developed. In the process, the concepts are recorded in concept profiles.
After being approved by the standardization team, the concepts are handed over to the value streams for further implementation. Afterwards, the team will continue to support the implementation in order to ensure continuous improvement of the catalogs and processes.
In JIRA, the "STA Request" (STA means standardization team) area was set up for all kinds of inquiries. Here, suggestions, ideas, and notes of any kind are also welcome.
