Success is the Sum of Several Parts: Products, People, and Patience

May 31, 2023

There is some good news on the project front! PI’s expertise has been selected by a technologically innovative producer of high precision laser material processing systems for luxury retail, medical device, and electronics manufacturing. In this case, PI will provide XY and Z motorized platforms for the customers’ core machine requirements.

The strong professional relationship built by the local Technical Sales Engineer, Sander Slagter, and the Technical Support Engineer, Martin Simpfendörfer, and Riccardo De Benedictis, Engineer Technical Sales – EMEA, brought about an opportunity to compare our V-417 linear motor stages with specific characteristics for laser cutting applications with an incumbent supplier. Over the past eighteen months, both the system and the expertise of the colleagues named above, as well as the exceptional application knowledge of PI’s Alexandre Barthlen, Engineer Field Application Engineering, were put to the test.

However, the customer did question some of our methodology in putting together stage systems for their application area. Fortunately, the parallel Integrated Multi Axes System (IMAS) project had already addressed most of these customer concerns. IMAS helps address the requirements of Laser Material processing applications for building multi-axes systems. Thanks to the trust placed in the colleagues involved, the customer placed an order for fifteen systems.

Andreas Schuh, Manager Product Development Industrial & Engineered Systems – DPG, took charge of IMAS development to provide manufacturing with a significantly improved solution for laser material processing.

The advantages of an IMAS-configured motorized positioner are:

  • Guaranteed alignment precision
  • Mapped calibrated stages providing improved accuracy for the XY configuration
  • Matched and pre-setup ACS controller configuration
  • Stages tuned to the customers selected load
  • Easy addition of XY third axes stages, e.g., lift or rotation
  • Enhanced cable routing (cable management) for additional axes or customer’s cabling
  • Available with or without a granite base
  • Optional vertical axes support including Z bracket or granite portal bridge
  • Mechanical mounting of SCANLAB galvo scanners
  • The professional application support from our Technical Sales Engineers (TSE’s) and Field Application Engineers (FAE’s)
